Synopse

Under the sign of the big A: Julia Ducournau’s new film deals intensely and intimately with the transformation of a teenager during an epidemic. Le Havre in the 1980s. 13-year old Alpha is growing up with her single mum and experiencing the turmoil of puberty. Mobbed by her classmates because she’s good at school, someone starts a rumour that she suffers from a contagious disease. When she has a tattoo done of the letter A, which then starts bleeding with increasing frequency, the mood around her turns to panic. Then her uncle, a hopeless junkie, moves in and the situation deteriorates further when she starts suffering from the same terrible cramps as he does.

Regie

Born in Paris, JULIA DUCOURNAU studied at La Fémis and has made a name for herself with body-horror films as a pioneer of a new feminist cinema in France. Her debut feature Raw (2016) had its premiere at Cannes. Her second film Titane won the Golden Palm in 2021. Alpha, Ducournau’s third film, was also shown in competition at Cannes.
